Professional Summary
Richard Schroeder is a translational physiologist with more than four decades of experience developing clinically relevant preclinical models that bridge fundamental physiology with therapeutic discovery. Throughout his career, he has worked across pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and contract research environments to design, establish, and refine models supporting cardiovascular, renal, metabolic, and cardiorenal research. His experience spans target validation and mechanism-of-action studies through efficacy, PK/PD evaluation, safety assessment, and first-in-human dose prediction, with a longstanding focus on generating physiologically meaningful data that can better inform therapeutic development.
Richard’s work has extended beyond implementing established techniques to developing new experimental approaches, integrating technologies with functional physiological endpoints, and refining analytical methods to answer complex research questions. Today, he brings that broader scientific perspective to a focused area of consulting and training: helping research organizations establish, optimize, and expand isolated heart and kidney capabilities. Whether building a new laboratory capability or troubleshooting and advancing an existing platform, Richard helps teams align model configuration, experimental conditions, instrumentation, endpoints, and data interpretation with the scientific question they need to answer.
Core Competencies
- Model Design & Optimization: Designing and refining isolated-organ models around the scientific question, with consideration for species, preparation and perfusion strategy, experimental conditions, instrumentation, endpoint selection, and functional validation.
- Isolated Perfused Heart Models: Extensive experience with Langendorff and working-heart preparations supporting efficacy, mechanism-of-action, direct cardiac safety, contractility, electrophysiology, coronary physiology, metabolism, and disease-model applications.
- Isolated Perfused Kidney Models: Extensive experience with isolated kidney preparations supporting renal hemodynamics, vascular function, glomerular filtration, tubular function, clearance, metabolism, biomarkers, therapeutic evaluation, and tissue-uptake applications.
- Experimental Design & Data Interpretation: Developing protocols and measurement strategies that connect isolated-organ physiology to the therapeutic mechanism or research objective, with support for troubleshooting, advanced analysis, interpretation of unexpected findings, and development of additional endpoints.
- Laboratory Development & System Configuration: Helping laboratories establish or expand isolated-organ capabilities through guidance on equipment, instrumentation, perfusion systems, data acquisition, supplies, workflow, and system configuration before and after platform implementation.
- Hands-On Technical Training: Providing customized, on-site instruction in isolated heart and kidney preparation, system setup, cannulation, stabilization, functional assessment, troubleshooting, data acquisition, and scientific interpretation, tailored to each laboratory’s equipment and research objectives.
Personal Philosophy
Richard believes the most valuable preclinical models are those designed around the scientific question rather than forcing the question to fit an established technique. His approach to isolated-organ research combines hands-on technical proficiency with a deep understanding of physiology, helping teams recognize not only how to establish a reliable preparation, but why particular configurations, conditions, and endpoints are appropriate for their research. Through training and consultation, Richard aims to transfer that understanding to other scientists so they can build reproducible internal capabilities, troubleshoot with confidence, and generate organ-level data that meaningfully inform therapeutic discovery and development.
