Professional Summary

Brad Gien is an accomplished preclinical surgical researcher with more than 25 years of experience advancing and scaling complex models for translational research. As President of Preclinical Research Associates (PRA), he leads production-level surgical services delivered directly in client labs — providing scalability, consistency, and efficiency while aligning with the highest standards of scientific practice and responsibility. Brad founded PRA with a firm commitment to the principles of the 3Rs, ensuring that surgical services performed on-site not only improve reproducibility and timelines but also deliver stronger scientific outcomes while advancing humane practices.

Brad has deep expertise in cardiovascular, oncology, pharmacokinetic, and neuro models, among others. He is widely recognized for refining complex surgical approaches to improve reproducibility, align outcomes more closely with human disease, and support efficient execution at scale. A central focus of his career has been training and mentoring teams in production-level surgical techniques, building programs that today generate a significant portion of the models used globally across preclinical research.

Before founding PRA, Brad served as Head of North American Surgery and Global Surgery Program Manager at a major global model supplier, where he directed large surgical teams and established global technical programs. He has designed surgical labs, contributed to GLP and IND-enabling studies, and collaborated with biopharma partners to integrate surgical services seamlessly into broader research programs.

Core Competencies
  • Complex Surgical Model Execution: Mastery of advanced procedures such as catheterizations, vascular interventions, and microsurgical techniques across cardiovascular, oncology, pharmacokinetic, and neurological research models.
  • Global Program Development: Experience designing and scaling international surgical programs, from lab build-outs and workflow optimization to global SOPs and performance metrics.
  • High-Throughput Workflow Innovation: Proven ability to develop efficient, production-level surgical pipelines that reduce timelines, improve reproducibility, and support multi-site operations.
  • Regulatory & Quality Integration: Proficiency in aligning surgical programs with GLP standards and IND-enabling requirements while developing protocols, assessing risk, and overseeing IACUC compliance.
  • Technical Training & Knowledge Transfer: Respected leader, capable of building custom training programs that elevate surgical teams worldwide, fostering consistency and long-term program sustainability.
Personal Philosophy

Brad believes that scientific progress depends on balancing precision with responsibility. Throughout his career, he has focused on refining surgical techniques and building teams that can deliver reliable outcomes at scale, while never losing sight of the principles of care and respect that underpin quality research. He finds the greatest reward in mentoring surgical teams and sharing the practices that have allowed production-level services to evolve into a reliable backbone of preclinical programs worldwide. For Brad, the value of preclinical research lies not only in advancing discovery, but in ensuring that the way models are created and maintained reflects the highest standards of reproducibility, efficiency, and responsibility.
